When it comes to work, it’s easy to fall into a comfortable routine. If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it, right? But if you become too comfortable with a routine, particularly at work, creativity and productivity sometimes start to wane. Periodically challenging your everyday routine, and pushing yourself to be yourself to try something new is sometimes the best thing you can do to boost both creativity and productivity. Here are a few of our tips for breaking away from the usual and reinventing a subpar routine.
The path to more productivity…
Let Yourself Be Challenged
One of the best ways to keep the creative juices flowing at work is to be challenged by something new. Volunteering for new projects, partnering up with a coworker that you haven’t worked closely with before, and stepping outside of your comfort zone are great ways to keep you challenged and constantly thinking not only about how you can better yourself at work, but how you can keep your entire company moving forward.
Measure Results, Not Time
Just because you put hours and hours toward your work does not mean you are getting more done. Tailor the way you measure your productivity. Start to evaluate yourself not just by how many things you check off your list or how quickly you checked them off, but by the quality of the work that you’re doing. Balancing the time needed to accomplish a task with the quality of your work will give you time to think outside the box and put your best foot forward in everything you do.
Take a look at the way you do your everyday tasks and decipher which are the most productive and which aren’t. If you always write your notes in a notebook and can never find specific things when you try to look back through them, maybe its a good idea to start trying different methods of jotting down and organizing notes. Reassessing will also allow you to take note of things that are time consuming and taking away from your productivity during the day. Taking a quick break to check Facebook or chat with a friend might seem harmless, but make sure they’re not regularly turning into half-hour dives into your news feed or extended personal chats. You’ll be surprised to find how much more productive you will be at work when you take the time to recognize bad habits and change them.
And on the flip side of that coin, take the time to recognize if there’s a time of day when you start to lose steam, and take a breather. Taking a short walk to get fresh air and clear your head may be just what you need to stay focused and creative throughout the day.
Change the Scenery
Working day in and day out at the same desk with the same view is sure to kill not only your mood, but your creative drive. As more and more companies adopt flexible working policies, employees should take advantage of the opportunity to get a change of scenery. Working from home, coffee shops and other remote locations allows employees to work from wherever they are, removing the stress of getting to the office everyday. Coworking spaces are also full of entrepreneurs and creative professionals, and these spaces are great for fostering innovation and idea collaboration, so take the opportunity to work among other professionals.
