Field types ensure that the information in your database is structured in the best possible way for you to get the most out of it. For example, to sort your sales leads from newest to oldest, they need to be structured as dates. TrackVia makes this easy, and even assigns an automatic "time/date stamp" to each record when it's created. Another example is a state field - setting state as a drop-down list prevents typos and different spellings, which hamper your ability to find what you're looking for (all sales leads in Colorado, for example).
